Professional Mentoring is:
* Assisting and advising an emerging marriage and family therapist at the initiation of their professional career
* Assisting the emerging marriage and family therapist in professional development
* Assisting the new marriage and family therapist in practical issues of managing a professional practice
* Facilitating contact with useful practice resources
Professional Mentoring is not:
* A substitute for clinical supervision
* Retraining
* Job networking
* Therapy or counseling
* A substitute for existing professional resources (i.e., AAMFT ethics committee)
Requirements of Mentees:
* Marriage and Family Therapy Associate status in the state of California
* Membership in the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapy
* Maintenance of professional standards
* Adherence to the AAMFT Code of Ethics
Requirements of Mentors:
* CA AAMFT membership
* Licensed and practicing professionally for at least three years
* Maintenance of professional standards
* Adherence to the AAMFT Code of Ethics
* Willingness to offer advice and support without remuneration
Expectations of Mentees:
* Open to new points of view and honest feedback
* Motivated to develop and pursue professional goals
* Appreciation of the mentors time and effort
* Accept that at times the mentor may refer to other sources of assistance
Expectations of Mentors:
* Will generate informed professional perspective on professional issues
* Adherence to codes and ethics of standards of practice
* Will provide an objective professional point of view
* Will share professional experiences

CA AAMFT Keys to Professional mentoring:
Duties of a Mentor:
* Identify the mentee’s expectations of the relationship
* Sharing your experience, knowledge, skills and ideas with the mentee
* Set aside and prepare for each meeting
Skills of a Mentor:
* Sharing personal lessons from professional practice
* Recognize and encourage potential in the mentee
* Assist with motivation and confidence in the mentee
* Understanding what it means to be a newer professional and desiring assistance with practice development
* Patience and tolerance with the mentee
Benefits of being a Mentor:
* You will hone your teaching and communication skills
* You will establish professional contacts
* You will gain satisfaction of assisting the development of an emerging professional
Duties of a Mentee:
* Share goals and expectations of the mentoring relationship
* Listen to the mentor’s advice, also remember that final choices are always yours alone
* Keep in regular contact with mentor
Skills of a Mentee:
* Understanding that there are not guaranteed outcomes to mentoring (i.e., employment)
* Sharing honestly and openly your current professional needs and challenges
* Desire to improve and succeed in Marriage and Family Therapy
