Founded in 1905 in Southern California’s Inland Empire as a sanitarium, Loma Linda University developed over the years into a health-sciences university and medical center internationally known for high technology, service-oriented medical care, and education. It is now a national center for health, wellness, and research. In keeping with this mission, Loma Linda offers COAMFTE accredited doctoral study in marital and family therapy. As one of only twenty accredited programs in the nation, the program is designed to mentor scholar-practitioners for research, teaching, administration, supervisory, and clinical training positions in universities and training institutes and in health-care, school, legal, and community-based settings. Students collaborate with faculty and each other in individual and small group settings, develop sophistication in systemic/relational perspectives and practices, and become thinkers and leaders in the field of marital and family therapy. The program nurtures an inclusive environment of cultural diversity and spirituality from all walks of life.
PROGRAMS
PhD in Marital and Family Therapy. (108 quarter units). Students develop expertise in conducting original research from both quantitative and qualitative approaches and skills for theory development and clinical training in academic and other settings.
DMFT--Doctor of Marital and Family Therapy. (101 quarter units) Students develop expertise in program development and evaluation, grant writing, and the skills for supervisory and administrative positions in clinical practice and community settings.
Interim Master’s and Doctorate in Marital and Family Therapy. (161 or 168 quarter units). Selected advanced students with Bachelor’s degrees or persons whose master’s degree is not in Marital and Family Therapy (or its equivalent) may meet all requirements for a Master of Science degree while in progress toward either the PhD or DMFT.
